JKPSC Prelims Syllabus: General Studies and CSAT

Review the subjects tested in both papers of the Jammu and Kashmir Combined Competitive Preliminary Examination, including core General Studies and aptitude topics.

The Jammu and Kashmir Public Service Commission (JKPSC) Combined Competitive Preliminary Examination is the screening stage for admission to the Mains. It consists of two objective General Studies papers: Paper I tests general awareness and subject knowledge, while Paper II assesses aptitude and comprehension skills.

Use the latest JKPSC notification as your final checklist. The Commission can revise the syllabus, scheme or qualifying conditions. Review the current advertisement and official syllabus document before preparing or applying.

Both papers are objective type. Under the published scheme, incorrect answers carry negative marks, and Paper II has a minimum qualifying requirement. The exact marks, question count, duration and qualifying rules should be confirmed from the current JKPSC notification.

General Studies Paper I syllabus

Paper I covers broad knowledge of India and the world. Candidates should also build familiarity with Jammu and Kashmir’s history, geography, society and current developments, using the topic boundaries in the official notification.

  • Current events: national and international developments, including issues relevant to Jammu and Kashmir.
  • History: Indian history and the Indian National Movement, with attention to the region’s historical background where prescribed.
  • Geography: physical, social and economic geography of India and the world; include Jammu and Kashmir’s geography, resources and environment in state-specific preparation.
  • Polity and governance: Constitution, political system, local governance, public policy, rights and related institutions.
  • Economy and social development: sustainable development, poverty, inclusion, demographics, social sector initiatives and economic issues.
  • Environment: ecology, biodiversity, climate change and environmental concerns.
  • General Science: everyday science and general scientific developments appropriate to the examination level.

General Studies Paper II (CSAT) syllabus

Paper II assesses reasoning, comprehension and problem-solving ability. It is qualifying in nature under the applicable scheme; candidates need to meet the prescribed minimum even when Paper I is their main ranking paper.

  • Comprehension and communication skills.
  • Interpersonal skills, including communication skills.
  • Logical reasoning and analytical ability.
  • Decision-making and problem-solving.
  • General mental ability.
  • Basic numeracy and data interpretation at the level specified by JKPSC.

Practise reading passages accurately, interpreting tables and charts, and solving reasoning questions under time limits. Confirm the detailed CSAT syllabus and qualifying threshold in the current scheme.

Including Jammu and Kashmir topics in your preparation

Alongside standard General Studies, develop a reliable regional knowledge base. Read the official syllabus closely for any explicit Jammu and Kashmir components, then cover relevant history, geography, economy, administration, culture, environment and current affairs with dependable sources. Regional examples can also deepen your understanding of wider topics such as governance, development and disaster management.

Keep regional notes organised by subject rather than collecting news without a syllabus link. For each issue, note the background, affected communities, government response and relevant data from trustworthy publications.

How to prepare from the JKPSC Prelims syllabus

  1. Download the current syllabus and mark every topic in both papers.
  2. Build core concepts using standard references, then add Jammu and Kashmir-specific material.
  3. Follow current affairs consistently and revise concise notes at regular intervals.
  4. Solve previous papers and timed mock questions to identify weak areas.
  5. Review incorrect answers and practise avoiding guesses where negative marking applies.
  6. Keep Paper II practice in your schedule and meet its qualifying standard, not just Paper I targets.
Plan the next stage early

After Prelims, successful candidates move on to the JKPSC Combined Competitive Mains Examination.
