The UPPCS exam pattern and syllabus give you two different planning tools. The pattern tells you how you will be assessed; the syllabus tells you what to study. Read them together before choosing resources or setting daily targets for the Uttar Pradesh Public Service Commission’s PCS examination.
This guide separates the paper structure from the subject overview, then connects both to practical preparation. If you are also exploring the services recruited through the examination, read our UPPCS posts and career options guide.
Keep the current official scheme beside your study plan. The factual pattern below follows the 2026 UPPSC advertisement (hosted PDF copy), particularly its examination scheme and syllabus appendices. Check UPPSC’s official notices for amendments and paper-specific instructions.
UPPCS 2026 exam at a glance
Prepare for a change in the kind of performance required across stages. Objective practice helps you test recall and choose between close options. Descriptive practice helps you explain a position within a word limit. Interview practice helps you discuss your reasoning clearly and respond to follow-up questions.
UPPCS Prelims exam pattern and marking
| Paper | Questions | Marks | Duration |
|---|---|---|---|
| GS I | 150 | 200 | 2 hours |
| GS II / CSAT | 100 | 200 | 2 hours |
Appear in both papers. CSAT requires 33%; Paper I determines shortlisting subject to the qualifying rules. Wrong answers lose one-third of the marks assigned to the question; blanks have no penalty. This is a proportional deduction, not a flat one-third mark.
When reviewing a mock test, distinguish a knowledge gap from a poor attempt decision. Track questions you could solve, questions you narrowed down sensibly, and questions you answered without a basis. That review gives you a more useful target than simply trying to increase your number of attempts.
UPPCS Prelims syllabus: GS and CSAT
GS I covers current affairs, history, geography, polity, development, environment and science. CSAT covers comprehension, communication, reasoning, decision-making, mental ability, elementary mathematics, English and Hindi.
Build a connected General Studies foundation
Organise your notes by topic rather than by the date you read an article. For example, add a relevant news item to a short note on the underlying institution or concept. During revision, explain the concept first and then use the news item to test whether you can apply it.
Give CSAT its own practice slot
A qualifying paper still needs preparation. Start with a timed diagnostic, identify the question types that slow you down, and practise those areas regularly. Record both accuracy and time taken so you can see whether a method is becoming more reliable.
UPPCS Mains exam pattern: eight papers
| Paper | Marks | Duration |
|---|---|---|
| General Hindi | 150 | 3 hours |
| Essay | 150 | 3 hours |
| General Studies I | 200 | 3 hours |
| General Studies II | 200 | 3 hours |
| General Studies III | 200 | 3 hours |
| General Studies IV | 200 | 3 hours |
| General Studies V | 200 | 3 hours |
| General Studies VI | 200 | 3 hours |
| Written total | 1,500 | Eight papers |
There is no optional paper in this scheme. General Hindi carries marks within the written total and also has a minimum standard prescribed by the commission or government. Follow its instructions rather than treating it like a language paper in a different examination.
UPPCS Mains syllabus: paper-wise overview
The subject map below condenses the NEXT IAS pattern and syllabus overview into broad areas. Use the official syllabus for the complete topic list.
| Paper | Broad study areas |
|---|---|
| General Hindi | Comprehension, précis, correspondence, vocabulary and grammar. |
| Essay | Culture, society, politics, science, economy, environment and contemporary issues. |
| GS I | History, heritage, society and geography. |
| GS II | Constitution, governance, social justice and international relations. |
| GS III | Economy, agriculture, technology, environment, disasters and security. |
| GS IV | Ethics, integrity, aptitude, public service values and case studies. |
| GS V | Uttar Pradesh history, culture, institutions, governance and social issues. |
| GS VI | Uttar Pradesh economy, agriculture, resources, environment and development. |
Use a different practice method for each paper
For Hindi, work on short exercises and review corrections carefully. For Essay, outline a central argument before drafting. For General Studies, practise identifying what the question asks before collecting examples. For ethics case studies, explain the options, affected people and reasons behind your decision.
Keep a small answer-review checklist: relevance to the question, a clear structure, accurate examples and a conclusion that follows from your argument. Review a few answers closely instead of producing a large pile that you never revisit.
How to prepare Uttar Pradesh-specific GS V and VI
Give state-focused learning a permanent place in your weekly plan. Create separate folders for the two papers and label each note with the syllabus point it supports. That makes it easier to identify missing coverage and prevents a collection of miscellaneous facts from becoming your entire state preparation.
A useful note can have four parts: the issue, the relevant state context, a dated example and a possible way forward. For a development topic, ask how you would explain the problem to someone unfamiliar with the region. For a governance topic, ask which institution is responsible and how you would assess its work.
Keep the year and source beside every statistic. Before using a figure in an answer, check that you understand what it measures. A well-explained example is more useful than several numbers whose meaning you cannot defend.
UPPCS interview and final merit
The Personality Test carries 100 marks. The standard written-plus-interview framework totals 1,600 marks; Prelims is a screening stage. The interview assesses general awareness, expression, personality and suitability for service.
Practise discussing your background and explaining a balanced view on a current issue. Invite follow-up questions when rehearsing: they reveal whether you understand your own argument. If you do not know something, practise acknowledging that directly and responding to the parts you can address.
Turn the UPPCS syllabus into a workable study plan
- Map coverage. Put each syllabus area into a checklist and assign your chosen resource to it.
- Set small outputs. Plan a revision note, a question set or a written answer instead of a vague target to study a subject.
- Pair learning with practice. Test a topic soon after studying it, then revisit it after an interval.
- Keep Hindi, CSAT and state topics visible. Give each a recurring slot in your timetable.
- Review weekly. Use errors and unfinished tasks to adjust the next week’s plan.
You do not need a perfect timetable to begin. Start with a routine you can sustain, collect evidence of what is working, and make small adjustments. Progress is easier to judge when your plan records completed work and recurring mistakes.
